Berlinde De Bruyckere, Zonder titel, 1994

Untitled

Materials: Watercolour and gouache on cardboard, 23,5 cm × 27,5 cm.

Berlinde De Bruyckere introduced the human figure into her work in the early series of drawings Untitled — to which we now refer as ‘blanket women’ — followed by sculptures such as Spreken. Wavy hair, or a blanket as in Spreken, covers their recognisable and identity-revealing features. We are all connected in our suffering. The materials used by De Bruyckere are metaphors and recognisable shapes that remind the viewer of their own reality.
